What a lipid profile measures

A lipid profile is a blood test that measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. Many labs ask you to fast for 9 to 12 hours before the test.

The role of each

LDL can build up in artery walls, so lower levels are generally better. HDL helps remove cholesterol from the bloodstream. Triglycerides are fats that rise with excess sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol.

Everyday habits that help

Regular physical activity, more fibre from whole grains, pulses and vegetables, fewer fried foods, and not smoking all support healthier numbers. Your doctor will consider your overall risk before suggesting treatment.
