What the thyroid does

The thyroid gland in your neck makes hormones that regulate metabolism, energy and temperature.

Common conditions

An underactive thyroid can cause tiredness, weight gain and feeling cold. An overactive thyroid can cause weight loss, a fast heartbeat and anxiety.

Testing and care

A blood test checks thyroid function. Endocrinologists and physicians manage thyroid conditions.
