A three month average
Red blood cells live for around three months. HbA1c measures how much sugar has attached to haemoglobin over that time, giving a longer view than a single glucose reading.
How results are used
Doctors use HbA1c to screen for diabetes and to see how well a care plan is working. Targets are personalised, so ask your doctor what goal is right for you.
Things that can affect the result
Anaemia, some haemoglobin variants, recent blood loss and pregnancy can make HbA1c less reliable. Your doctor may combine it with other tests.
