What happens in type 2 diabetes
In type 2 diabetes the body does not use insulin effectively, so sugar builds up in the blood. Over time, high blood sugar can affect the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.
Common signs
Many people have no symptoms at first. Others notice frequent urination, increased thirst, tiredness, slow healing wounds or blurred vision.
How it is diagnosed
Doctors use blood tests such as fasting glucose, HbA1c or an oral glucose tolerance test. Screening is especially useful if you have a family history, are overweight or are over 30.
Living well with diabetes
With regular monitoring, balanced meals, activity, sleep and the treatment your doctor recommends, many people live full and active lives.
