Why screening matters

Screening looks for cancer before symptoms appear. Not every cancer has a reliable screening test, and recommendations depend on age, sex and risk factors.

Common screening tests

Examples include mammography for breast cancer, Pap smear or HPV testing for cervical cancer, and colonoscopy or stool tests for bowel cancer. Oral examinations are valuable for people who use tobacco.

Talk about your risk

Family history, tobacco and alcohol use, and some infections change your risk. A doctor can suggest a screening plan that suits you.
